“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 NIV
I can admit I can allow anxiety to overwhelm me to the point of mental paralysis. The imprint of these complicated emotions lingers on the surface, robbing me and others of our peace and balance. Therefore, intrusive thoughts creep in and tell us that “We are broken,” “We’ve lost our way,” or “This is just who we are.” The issue with this thought pattern is that it’s a negative perception of emotions. In essence, emotions such as anxiety, fear, and loneliness, to name a few, are not bad emotions. Most hold this negative perception as a lack of tolerance that society has placed upon us. Therefore, we compare our mental health and well-being to others. This is an unhealthy approach because there’s no counsel, direction, or boundaries to guide the improvement of emotional anxiety.
As a result, we think that life without the shadow of emotional anxiety would be a life of greater meaning. However, I challenge that thought. Knowing, accepting, and managing our emotions a lot better will help you avoid those recurrent emotional floods that the grip of anxiety and other emotions holds. Consequently, many will seek prayer, self-help material, and self-soothing techniques. Hence, none of these processes totally address the root cause, which therapy platforms provide, such as resources provided at NuWell Counseling Services.
In essence, without therapeutic therapy, one can’t or doesn’t have the tools to effectively manage their emotions properly. This situation creates more torment for them over time, causing them to feel helpless and that everything around them is beyond their control. Therefore, we must be clear: the current emotions that we don’t manage with proper tools such as therapy will overwhelm us tomorrow and well into the future. If this situation becomes chronic, conditions such as generalized anxiety and depression may emerge.
That’s why seeking an experienced therapist, such as the counselors at NuWell Counseling Services, can help you manage your emotions so that they will not take over. We understand that
emotions cannot be eliminated but rather managed. Understanding is key to taking the next step. At NuWell Counseling Services, we move beyond the diagnosis and labels. Our desire is to help you get to the root of your uncontrolled emotions, heal from your past, and replace negative emotional response patterns with positive ones. Basically, we help you rebuild the structure surrounding your emotions and learn the THRIVE!
Look, we’re never going to conquer perfection. You’re not, and I’m not. This is our reality. However, we can change the habits that hinder our ability to thrive. Cast your burdens on the Lord and
let the rest fall into place. I promise you’ll find a peace that cannot be overcome by unmanaged emotional anxiety in this world we live in.
