Spiritual Abuse and Church Hurt

When faith has been used against you, you deserve care that is safe, honest, and rooted in Christ.
NuWell’s online pastoral counseling helps you name what happened, separate God’s character from the people who hurt you, and rebuild a faith that brings freedom instead of fear.

What Is Spiritual Abuse?

Spiritual abuse happens when religious authority, Scripture, or access to community is used to control, shame, exploit, or silence someone. It is a repeated pattern, not a single imperfect moment, and it can come from a pastor, a ministry, a congregation, or even a family.
Control

Scripture used as a weapon

Verses or “God told me” claims are used to override your choices about money, marriage, medical care, or reporting harm.

Silence

Questions treated as rebellion

Honest concerns are labeled bitterness, disloyalty, or lack of faith, and people who speak up lose roles or friendships.

Secrecy

No real accountability

Leaders cannot be questioned, finances are hidden, and complaints are handled by the leader’s allies.

Fear

Isolation and dependence

Outside friendships are discouraged, people who leave are shunned, and approval feels necessary for God’s favor.

You are not imagining it

How Spiritual Abuse Can Affect You

Because it reaches into the place where you expected to find God’s care, spiritual abuse can leave deep wounds. People often describe:
  • Fear in spiritual settings, like tension or dread during worship or when entering a church.
  • Heavy shame and self-blame, a sense that you are the problem.
  • Trouble trusting your own judgment after years of being told your concerns were sin.
  • A distorted picture of God as a harsh judge rather than a gracious Father.
  • Loneliness and lost community when friendships and roles disappear.
These reactions make sense after harm. They are not proof of weak faith.

Finding the right care

Is Pastoral Counseling Right for Me?

Good care starts with the right fit. Many people benefit from pastoral counseling and licensed therapy together.
Pastoral counseling may fit if
  • You are functioning day to day but carry shame or confusion about God
  • Scripture was used to control or silence you
  • You are grieving lost community or friendships
  • You have questions about forgiveness, boundaries, or finding a healthy church
Start with licensed care if
  • You have panic attacks, flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories
  • You feel numb, detached, or persistently hopeless
  • It is hard to sleep, work, or care for yourself
  • You are having thoughts of harming yourself

NuWell refers to licensed, faith-integrated trauma care at Grace Christian Counseling.

When safety comes first

If You Are in Danger or Harm Is Ongoing

If abuse involves threats, stalking, sexual misconduct, physical harm, or harm to a child, it should not be handled only inside the church. You should never be required to confront the person who harmed you. NuWell is not an emergency service.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is pastoral counseling the same as therapy?
No. NuWell’s pastoral counseling is non-clinical, faith-centered care. It focuses on spiritual questions, Scripture, prayer, shame, and rebuilding trust in God. It does not diagnose or treat mental-health conditions. If you need licensed trauma care, we can help connect you with Grace Christian Counseling.
How do I know if what happened to me was spiritual abuse?
Spiritual abuse is a repeated pattern, not a single bad sermon or disagreement. Look for accountability that does not work, questions treated as rebellion, Scripture used to control choices, secrecy, and fear or isolation. Our guide to the signs of a dangerous pastor walks through these patterns.
Do I have to go back to church to heal?
No. Many people need a season away from church to heal, and that can be a wise boundary. Some later find a healthy community at their own pace. We will never pressure you to return to an unsafe place or to reconcile before it is safe.
Do I have to forgive the person who hurt me?
Forgiveness matters in Scripture, but it is not something you must do on anyone else’s timetable, and it does not erase what happened, remove consequences, or require restored access. We help you work through forgiveness honestly, with safety and boundaries in place.
Can I meet with someone online and keep this confidential?
Yes. NuWell sessions take place online, so you can meet from wherever you feel safe. Your counselor will explain how privacy and confidentiality work before you begin, including limits such as immediate danger or suspected harm to a child.

You Do Not Have to Carry This Alone

The fear and shame placed on you do not reflect God’s heart toward you. Talk with our care team about pastoral counseling, coaching, or a referral to licensed care, without pressure or obligation.
