Common Marriage Challenges We Help With
Couples come to NuWell with all kinds of concerns. These are some of the most common, with guides you can read today.
Talking Without Getting Nowhere
Learn to express what you feel, listen to understand, and stop conversations from turning into the same fight.
Why you keep having the same argument →Rebuilding Broken Trust
Lying, hidden choices, or infidelity can shake a marriage. Repair needs truth, accountability, and time.
Rebuilding trust after lying →Apology and Forgiveness
Learn what a credible apology includes and how forgiveness, trust, and reconciliation differ.
How to apologize to your spouse →Heated Arguments
Practice a pause-and-return plan so you can calm down without stonewalling or walking away from repair.
Silent treatment or healthy pause? →Emotional Distance
When you feel more like roommates than partners, rebuild warmth, attention, and spiritual intimacy step by step.
Finances, Family, and Faith
Navigate money tension, parenting, in-laws, and differences in spiritual practice with shared values.

What to Expect in Christian Marriage Counseling
Your counselor or coach creates a safe, grace-filled space where each of you can speak honestly and be heard. Early conversations often explore:
- Spiritual foundations. How your faith shapes daily life together and what prayer looks like in your marriage.
- Goals. Where you each hope your marriage will be a year, or ten years, from now.
- Current challenges. Patterns of miscommunication or hurt that keep repeating.
- Values and priorities. Where you align, where you differ, and what matters most.
- Communication and conflict. Whether you listen to understand or to respond.
- Forgiveness and reconciliation. Past wounds that need tending, honestly and without pressure.
- Community. Church, friends, and accountability that can support your marriage.
Pastoral Counseling vs. Clinical Counseling
Both can help a marriage, but they are not the same kind of care. Knowing the difference helps you choose well, and our care team will help you sort it out in your first conversation.
NuWell pastoral care may fit when you want…
- Scripture and prayer at the center of the conversation
- Help with communication, conflict cycles, or rebuilding trust
- Practical, faith-based accountability for both spouses
- A relationship where both of you can speak and choose freely
Clinical counseling may fit better when…
- You or your spouse may need a diagnosis or mental-health treatment
- Trauma, addiction, or serious depression or anxiety is part of the picture
- Symptoms are disrupting work, sleep, parenting, or safety
- You want care that may be covered by health insurance
Within the NuWell family, Grace Christian Counseling offers licensed, Christ-centered clinical counseling. We will gladly help you make that connection.
NuWell’s pastoral counseling and Christian life coaching are non-clinical. They do not include diagnosis, psychotherapy, clinical treatment, or emergency care.

Applying Christian Principles Like Forgiveness
Scripture repeatedly points us toward forgiveness, not as a way to excuse hurtful behavior, but as a path toward honest reconciliation and growth. Forgiveness, trust, and reconciliation are related, but they are not the same decision, and none of them should be rushed or forced.
A pastoral counselor can help you and your spouse explore what Scripture teaches and turn it into daily practice: learning how to apologize well, extend grace, rebuild broken trust, or start fresh when old habits resurface.
“And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:32 (WEB)
Seven Core Principles for a Christian Marriage
A Christ-centered marriage takes more than good intentions. These biblical values help couples not only survive hard seasons, but grow through them.
Serve one another in love
Look for practical ways to build each other up and meet one another’s needs.
Practice committed love
Love is a daily choice modeled on Christ’s sacrificial love, not only a feeling.
Show respect consistently
Honor each other’s words, opinions, and boundaries so both of you feel safe to grow.
Prioritize your marriage
Protect time together amid kids, careers, and extended family.
Stay faithful
Commitment that outlasts changing emotions, rooted in faithfulness and perseverance.
Practice humility
Choose to serve and support each other rather than keeping score.
Bring out the best in each other
Encourage strengths, support through weaknesses, and grow more like Christ together.
These principles assume a relationship where both spouses are safe. They are never a reason to accept abuse, threats, or control.
The RESTORE Path for Marriage
NuWell’s RESTORE Path is a flexible pastoral map, not a rigid protocol or a promise of a particular outcome. Its seven movements help couples keep the larger work of healing in view.
Recognize
Name the wound and the pattern honestly.
Establish
Establish safety for both spouses.
Separate
Separate truth from distortion and blame.
Tend
Tend what was wounded with patience.
Orient
Orient your identity in Christ.
Rebuild
Rebuild healthy, consistent patterns.
Engage
Engage the life God intended, together.
When Couples Counseling Is Not the Right First Step
Ordinary conflict is not the same as abuse, and abuse is not a communication problem. If there are threats, intimidation, physical or sexual violence, stalking, control of money or movement, isolation, or spiritual pressure backed by retaliation, joint sessions can increase risk.
In those situations, individual support and safety planning come first. Our care team can help you find the right next step privately.
In immediate danger, call 911.
National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800-799-SAFE (7233), text START to 88788, or chat at thehotline.org.
For suicide, self-harm, or a mental-health or substance-use crisis, call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org. NuWell is not an emergency service.
